SOME COMMENTS ON EACH SONG
Who Am I?
Jean Valjean is my favorite character to sing. This song contains the highest note that he sings, the B4 natural as the last note of the song. It only appears once in the entire show. I actually get it pretty good here compared to the past. I don’t always get it, but it’s beginning to stabilize.
Bring Him Home
This is the most difficult song of the show and probably the most difficult of any song that I sing. This is because it needs to be sung very softly, especially at the beginning. I don’t quite get it right this time, but then things get better as the song moves along.
When recovering from a lifetime of vocal strain,—pressing and pushing,—soft notes sung well are the hardest and are usually the last thing to finally get right.
This song ends on a soft A4 that needs to be sung in full voice (M1) without flipping into falsetto (M2), which I’m beginning to get down.
What Have I Done?
A fun song that presents timing problems for me in the latter part. It ends with a strong G4 natural and I’m getting it pretty good these days. This is the first important “strong high note” for tenors to master.
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables
I’ve only begun to sing this recently. It’s sung but the young character, Marius, and has some challenges for tenors in the lower range.
Til I Hear You Sing
The character singing this is actually the Phantom from Phantom of the Opera, except it’s from the little-known sequel, Love Never Dies.
The soft notes at the start are still difficult for me. I do hope to sing this really well one day, as I love the song.
