Recent Singing Samples – Pop and Rock

This week I recorded a bunch of cover songs to share with a few friends and thought I’d post them here. They were recorded in rapid succession, one take per song, and there’s no vocal editing or pitch correction of any kind.

I use these for my own development, too.

SOME COMMENTS ON EACH SONG

What a Good Boy

This could be my all-time favorite song to sing from my all-time favorite pop band. It’s hard to resist the temptation to mimic the original singer (as it is with most covers).

Faithfully

I’ve gone from not being able to even attempt this song to feeling as if I’m starting to sing it well.

This would be a wonderful song and singer to be able to cover.

Come Sail Away

I haven’t sang this for a couple years and just recorded it on a whim with these others and it feels so much easier than ever before.

Baba O-Riley

I usually only sing the first part of this song when I’m running through some old rock songs with difficult beginnings as part of my warm up.

Don’t Dream It’s Over

I started to sing this recently and notice that the original singer has a very soft voice and softness is a challenge for me. Also, most all tenors are lyric tenors and I’m a spinto tenor (heavier voice than lyric tenors) so I have to be extra careful not trying to sing like the original singer.

I love to sing the chorus of this song. It gets better as the song progresses.

June Becomes July

This is a song by J.R. Richards who was the singer for a band in the 90’s called Dishwalla. I always liked his voice and this is from his solo album. Needs work.
